Vitara engine swap?

Post by RadioRay » Mon Jan 16, 2017 10:27 pm

Hi all,
Just about to get my truck through yet another MOT after sourcing some replacement tryes, still need a replacement transfer box cross member. Just thinking about the next road tax and started thinking again about fitting a VAG diesel engine. I had a look at 1400 series of engine's they look like a possibility with bhp of 68 - 89 depending on which verreant. The torque of 144 - 195 ft Lb @ 1600 - 2200 RPM were as the 1600 8 valve has only a torque 93 ft Lb @ 3100 RPM. Yes I know it has 77 BHP. I think that a VAG 1400 diesel would make an interesting setup particular as the road tax would be halved.

Has anyone put a 1400 in a Vitara? If so how did it perform?

Just wondering what others think about using 1400 rather than the usual golf 1600 diesel.

There's going to be a lot of electronics involved in that one

And it doesn't effect your yearly road tax either unfortunately.

indeed, it'll be slow and gutless.

For the same amount of trouble, and proably less £££ you could get a noice 1.9 tdi in there...

And as M&D said, your tax won't change.

Looks like I'll be trying to source a good 1.9 VW , have seen that someone has put a Vauxhall engine in a Vitara will start going around breakers and seeing what's available

your priority is the gearbox, specifically, which one will fit the engine of your choice.

VW = Acme

Pug = commercial bellhousing & parts

Vauxhall = carlton gearbox.

However you do it, don't expect to save any money until you've covered at least 50k miles - that's what it took for me. BUT I loves my diesel :)

Hmph, I blew mine up. Twice. Then sold it and bought a petrol truck.
