So where has everyone gone, what's everyone doing? It's been a bit slow on the forum resantly.

So I thought I would give update on what I am doing and considering. Fitted a front diff protection 5mm steel plate and some additional recovery points. Been out a few times (North
Hampshire) and got well an truly grounded but fortunately got pulled off.

So I'm in the process of doing a 1 1/2 suspension lift. I have done a lot of reading and I thought this would be a good place to start. But i am concerned about the risk of damaging the diff/CV's or axales.

I have read that one can change the front aluminium diff to a steel one but that does not address the problem of damaging the CV joints withe extream articulation. The problem with using GV steel diff's is it would require the changing all the internals over (not a small job)

So I was wondering is there any stronger axales from other 4x4 that can be made to fit a Vitara. If so has anyone got experience of swapping axales.

Any axle can be made to fit, it just depends in your fabrication skills. If you're thinking of keeping it independent up front then a steel axle off a Grand Vitara will see you right. As for drive shafts you can make hybrid shafts using Ford Ranger (I think) cv joints. I believe there's a write up abiut them on the Bits4Vits blog.
Personally I don't think the drive shafts are that much problem unless you're very heavy footed, and I'd rather blow a cv the the diff.

i have Land Rover axles fitted to mine fair bit of work but i think worth it the suzuki fronts just ant up to the job.

I fitted Hilux CVs.
- Stubby shaft on the short side of the diff
- Adapter flanges from the Suzuki flanges to the Hilux half-shafts
- Hagen widening mod to give enough room
- Hilux freewheel hubs on adapter flanges (to allow the room for the length of the longer Hilux half-shafts.
- CV's from an IFS Hilux Surf, 1998 - 2005 model.
- brass bearings

Allows a single replacement CV to be carried as a spare. But it is not an afternoons work.

First pic st a mock-up of it pre-installation. Second pic is it fitted, but before shortening up the droop a little. Third pic is the kit I used.

What did you do about the seals on the back of the hubs/shafts?

That's the brass bits, they replace the bearings/seals.

This was the prototype for a kit, so it has apparently been refined a bit since and can obviously also be purchased. Search BenT on Auszookers or Offroadexpress
