Making a skid plate / winch mount for the LWB Zukhini Vitara
Evening! I've had a good day today, making a skid plate / winch tray combined - Might look a bit "out on a limb" having the winch out there... But there's filleting to go in underneath yet too! More in the blog! - http://www.bits4vits.co.uk/store/skid-p ... g_263.htmlDave... gone for Kebabs!

Thanks Guys, enjoyed myself yesterday at last having some time for some tinkering... hopefully getting back to it Wednesday, and I think Sunday is free again this week! Winch should be on for 'laning on the 9th...?

Re: Spent the day making a skid plate / winch mount!
It was dark and wet when I finished last night, so I was keen to get out and try the real plate today under the truck - Lines up perfectly! Well chuffed! And from the front - Happy with that... it can all be welded up now then... and some drainage holes cut, which I forgot... and then ground down neatly and sent for powdercoating... Edit :Just nipped out to take another photo as I realised I'd missed probably the most important one - attack angle! There, that's better, you can now see the attack angle hasn't been effected much by the addition of the winch plate hanging under the bumper...

Sell the pattern. Wouldn't do much good to me though. swb/lwb... aren't they different chassis wise? But just seeing how it could be done, is worth a lot i think. An easy(-ish) design, that seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Re: Spent the day making a skid plate / winch mount!
i am just wondering whether it would be better to make those ribs out of something a tad more sturdy, not so much to prevent flex, but to prevent damage to them should you come into contact with a rock or 10,
possibly the same design from some 125x50mm box section?

Re: Spent the day making a skid plate / winch mount!
Ah, I see, it was hard to fathom out what you were getting at by your first post!
No, I'm quite happy with it as it is, Zukhini's only a mild laning hack (128k on it!) whilst I get the buggy built... I just need to get a winch and some axle protection on it, if I was building a winch bumper then yes I'd probably bulk it up some more... But Zukhini's been out laning* a good few times so far and never needed a winch yet, so it's only there "just in case"...
*Let's face it - there shouldn't be many times you need to use a winch on a greenlane... maybe getting stuck going up one of our favourite 'lanes "Henryd", but normally greenlanes shouldn't necesitate a winch?...

Re: Making a skid plate / winch mount for the LWB Zukhini Vi
Not much time today, but being self-employed I can always sneak off for an hour... So I set about drilling the drainage holes... One under the winch's drum... And then two on the main skid plate section... they are close to the edge as that's how far my little pillar drill would reach in... And then a quick tidy up ready for a... Full day off (9am to 4pm) tomorrow so will drag the MIG out from storage whilst the extension was being built, and hopefully weld it all up assuming it still works, and the banjo socket the electrician installed works, and the consumer unit can handle the draw LOL ... So another installment tomorrow?... Edit : Have added yellow lines to the above photo to show where the two strengthing fillets are going to go, they'll have to be to the left of each pairs of the winch mounting holes, as they are offset slightly so that the winch sits central in the bumper recess... Dave

Re: Making a skid plate / winch mount for the LWB Zukhini Vi
Just thinking. You could move the fillets slightly closer (to get the bolt holes on the outside, both sides) and box it with sheet metal. SHould prove strong enough, regarding Toselands concern. Maybe even add a third fillet., if needs be.

Is it stronger than the checker-plate alloy one that you originally fitted on Superzuki? I don't recall how thick that was.
