Scrapping the UberVit

This weekend will see the end of an era for me as I'm scrapping the UberVit. Fear not though, as I've bought a commercial and will be swapping the Calmini kit and steel front axle off my truck into the new one.
I'm in equal parts looking forward to it, and dreading it at the same time. This current one is my third Vit, bit it's the first one I've modified and I'm going to be sad to see it go. Hopefully, though, more power and cheaper running costs will make me smile as much as the blue truck has.

Well... that was an experience!! :shock:

Following the monumental effort of swapping the suspension from one vit to another, in the rain..! :)
The following morning saw blue sky's and sunshine where upon, with renewed enthusiasm, we once more started work upon the Vits. :-bd
Tracking sorted, on one of them :), seats swapped along with some other little bits.
all rolled out to the road to do the things that we needed the doors opened for, last minute swap off seat belts to match the new seats and we (ant and his boy) were away.
All in all a success, i think.

i only have the front bit as yet.. i am gonna look at making my own rear axle part i think, at least the design i have in my head would be sensible

there was a rear A arm on fleabay for silly money, went for over £150, but then got relisted so i assume someone screwed up

You could always make a twin linked setup at the top using the existing chassis points and a new bracket on the diff?

Unless you have really long rear shocks then you only really need to fit a spacer to the rear, the Calmini rear arms are stronger and tucked up better but are the same length as stock. When I fitted my kit I disconnected the rear shocks and jacked up the chassis, leaving the rear wheels on the ground, everything swapped straight over without moving anything.

But, the adjustable rose/heim joint on the calmini setup does have one benefit that I found. I was running the calmini setup with a balljoint spacer, and my prop angles were TERRIBLE! I was getting through both rear UJs in 4K miles, and always had driveline vibrations.

I removed the spacer, and the problem vanished although it may have caused another small problem on a trip to strata... With the adjustable arm, you can tune the angle perfectly.

I might add, I seem to be the only person to have encountered this problem with a balljoint spacer; lots of miles and a diesel lump probably didn't help.

Some people have used offset spacers to correct the prop angle. If you run the Calmini top arm then I heartily recommend running a dust cover.

Aye, I dislike Rose joints, so I have a Johnny Joint ready to be fitted.

There's still a ton of little problems with the commercial, not least if which is the fact I don't like it and I'm quite upset I've scrapped my old one. :roll: I keep getting reassured it'll grow on me, but I don't know...

That's interesting?... what don't you like about it? I always thought most of us aspired to upgrading to a commercial / diesel one day... I know I've often thought of it...?

You've had it up and running for 24 hours!

Damn it, get the niggly jobs done on it (fuel pump!) and get her painted in olive drab. Turn the fuel and boost up, you'll love it then.
