Hi All.
It's been a while since I was on here last. I've had a bit of a break on the vit due to being a bit busy. It's stood for over a year and finally decided to do the few jobs on it.
I've got a issue with the rear diff. Think it's been there since I fitted the rear locker, which is a lock right. There is lots of play turning the prop shaft and it grabbing against the rear wheels. I thought the play would be between the pinion and the crown wheel where I hadnt put it back correctly. But I've now taken the diff out and the slack is fine.
The play seems to be in the lock right itself. Just wondering if this is normal or if not if there is a solution. As it makes it difficult to drive, having to release the clutch slowly to stop it banging when the slack is taken up. I was thinking it might be to do with not having enough shims in. Any advice welcome. Kev might have an answer??
Too much play in rear diff (lock Right)

hi nige
is there any play (excess) in the side gears, if you used the original suzuki ones then perhaps they are worn? as far as i can remember, the shimming of the lockrite would only affect its locking/unlocking qualities. im going to fit one in my current vit when funds allow this time im going to get the full kit with new side gears included.

Ah ok, thanks. I should have asked you before taking the diff out!!!
Kev, no there is no play in the side gears themselves. They seem fine.
The play is between the two clutches and the rods where the planet gears used to be. I guess you need play there for it to be able to disengage. I will leave it as it is.

They are amazing, and cheaper than an air locker. I don't think I would like to have one in the front as well and drive it on the road.

Very true. In fact it wouldn't be an issue at all as it would only lock when it's being driven, which it isn't in 2WD!

they are locked all the time they only unlock when going round corners as they are more of a unlocker than a lockerNigeVitara wrote:Very true. In fact it wouldn't be an issue at all as it would only lock when it's being driven, which it isn't in 2WD!
